Emotional Connection - Part II

Connection in a Disconnected World

Inevitably when we feel that fraudulent side of us - those moments when we realize we don’t actually possess what we thought - we will find ourselves at a crossroads. We can fake it or we can decide to pursue the real thing. Authentic encouragement from others becomes vital in this moment of our story and this type of encouragement doesn’t come without authentic connection.

The original Webster's 1828 dictionary defines encouragement as the act of giving courage or confidence of success. I would opine most of what we call encouragement today is often nothing more than flattery at best and at worse disingenuous. We often resort to this “encouragement” simply because we haven’t taken the time to know and connect with those we lead and work with on a daily basis. In this moment we need courage & confidence, but only those who have connected with us and know us are able to do it.

Deeper Roots

  1. Furthering this idea of present fraud in all of us. Think about a time when you were confronted with the stark reality that you didn’t possess, but you were supremely confident you did. What area of life was this?

    • What was your process for confronting this moment?

  2. If you took the step to tell someone about this area of life how did they respond to you?

    • Did their response surprise you? If so, how did that impact you?

  3. What areas of life are you currently trying to fake?

    • What is that doing to you on the inside?

    • Do you think it is possible by faking it you could be denying someone the honor of walking alongside you to pursue something real?

  4. When we think about authentic encouragement, which is necessary in this season of strengthening, how do you see the need for authentic connection as integral to this?
